Best Greek Islands Besides Santorini and Mykonos

By Angela Hughes, CEO & Luxury Travel Advisor

Discover the Greek islands that offer extraordinary beaches, authentic culture, exceptional hotels, and private villas.

Santorini and Mykonos may dominate the conversation about Greek island vacations, but Greece is home to thousands of islands and islets, with dozens offering dramatically different experiences. The best Greek island is the one that best matches how you want to travel.

WHY LOOK BEYOND?

Why Look Beyond Santorini and Mykonos?

"Santorini is famous for its volcanic caldera, cliffside villages, and extraordinary sunsets. Mykonos is known for its beaches, Cycladic architecture, stylish hotels, and energetic nightlife. But popularity comes with a trade-off.

For luxury travelers looking for privacy, personal space, authentic experiences, and a slower pace, looking beyond the famous two can completely transform a Greek vacation. You may discover quieter beaches, exceptional boutique hotels, spectacular coastal scenery, and authentic villages.

A generic ranking is not enough. A honeymoon couple may want something completely different from a family traveling with children. This is why a luxury travel advisor asks a better question: 'Which Greek island is best for you?'

Frequently Asked Questions

The best alternatives depend on your travel style. Crete is the strongest all-around choice, Paros is an excellent Mykonos alternative, Milos is ideal for dramatic beaches and private boating, Naxos is excellent for families, Corfu is outstanding for villas and privacy, and Folegandros is a strong romantic alternative to Santorini.

Milos and Folegandros are two of the strongest alternatives. Milos is particularly good for couples who want private boating, dramatic beaches and adventure, while Folegandros is better for couples seeking intimacy, quiet and traditional Cycladic atmosphere.

Paros is one of the best alternatives to Mykonos for travelers who want stylish restaurants, attractive bars and an energetic evening scene without making nightlife the entire vacation.

Naxos and Crete are among the strongest choices for families. Naxos combines excellent beaches, activities, food and authentic villages, while Crete offers a much larger selection of luxury resorts, private experiences and family-friendly activities.

There is no single answer. For luxury resorts and variety, choose Crete. For private villas, consider Corfu or Kefalonia. For understated luxury and privacy, Antiparos is particularly appealing. The best choice depends on the type of luxury you want.

Milos, Naxos, Crete and Kefalonia are excellent choices. Milos is particularly strong for dramatic coastlines and private boat excursions, while Naxos offers long sandy beaches that work especially well for families.

Folegandros is one of the strongest choices for travelers who want dramatic scenery, romance and Cycladic architecture without Santorini's scale. Antiparos is another excellent option for travelers whose priority is privacy and understated luxury.

Crete is arguably the strongest overall choice for culinary depth. Tinos and Sifnos are excellent for travelers who specifically want local food culture, traditional recipes and authentic culinary experiences.

It depends on what you want. Mykonos is stronger for nightlife, beach clubs, luxury shopping and high-energy social travel. Paros can be better for travelers who want sophisticated hotels, excellent dining, beautiful beaches and a more relaxed island rhythm.

Neither is universally better. Santorini is the stronger choice for caldera views, iconic sunsets and famous luxury hotels. Milos is better for travelers who prioritize beaches, private boating, unusual geological scenery and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Corfu, Kefalonia, Antiparos, Crete and Paros are strong options. Corfu and Kefalonia are particularly attractive for families and multigenerational groups because larger private villas can provide substantial space and privacy.

Corfu and Crete are excellent choices because they combine quality accommodation with diverse experiences. Naxos and Rhodes are also strong options when beaches, activities and cultural experiences need to work for several generations.

Consider Tinos, Naxos, Sifnos, Syros, Folegandros or Amorgos. Authenticity is subjective, but these islands can offer a stronger connection to local food, architecture, villages, traditions and everyday island life.

For most luxury travelers, one or two islands is ideal for a 7–14 night vacation. Adding too many islands can create unnecessary ferry transfers, packing and unpacking. A carefully selected two-island combination is often more enjoyable than trying to collect destinations.

For a first-time traveler wanting variety, Crete, Paros or Naxos are excellent choices. If experiencing the famous Greek postcard scenery is important, combining Santorini with another island can also work well.
