THE CORE DIFFERENCE

Fly Cruise vs Drake Passage

This is one of the most important decisions when planning a Silversea Antarctica journey.

FLY CRUISE

Antarctica Fly Cruise

For travelers who would rather avoid the Drake Passage, Silversea offers an alternative. The Antarctica Fly Cruise allows travelers to fly between South America and Antarctica. Ideal for those with limited vacation time, concerns about seasickness, or who want to maximize time in Antarctica.

DRAKE PASSAGE

Sail Across the Drake Passage

The traditional Antarctic expedition experience involves sailing between South America and Antarctica across the Drake Passage. Best for travelers who enjoy the journey as much as the destination, want the traditional expedition experience, and are comfortable with potentially rough seas.

Antarctic Wildlife Encounters

What You Might See on Your Expedition

Penguins

Antarctica is famous for its penguin populations. Depending on the season and itinerary, you may encounter Gentoo, Chinstrap, Adelie, and the spectacular King penguins in South Georgia.

Whales

Late summer (February to March) offers the best opportunities to see Humpback whales, Minke whales, and Orcas surfacing in the icy waters.

Seals

Zodiac excursions often bring guests close to Weddell seals, Leopard seals, Crabeater seals, and massive Southern elephant seals resting on ice floes.

Spectacular Landscapes

Beyond wildlife, the scenery itself is breathtaking: enormous glaciers, towering icebergs, blue ice, deep fjords, and dramatic Antarctic skies.

Common First-Time Antarctica Mistakes

Avoid these pitfalls when planning your expedition

Treating Antarctica Like a Normal Cruise

Antarctica is an expedition. Weather and ice can change plans. Expect flexibility, not a rigid schedule.

Choosing the Cheapest Departure

The lowest fare may not produce the best overall experience. Consider the itinerary, ship, season, and expedition goals.

Ignoring the Drake Passage

Do not wait until after booking to discover that the crossing may be challenging for you. Consider a Fly Cruise if prone to seasickness.

Booking Tight Flights

Remote expedition travel requires contingency planning. Add pre-cruise nights to protect against flight delays or missed connections.

Expecting Guaranteed Wildlife

No reputable advisor should guarantee penguins, whales or seals at a specific location. It is a wild, unpredictable ecosystem.

Planning Antarctica in Isolation

Adding Patagonia, Buenos Aires, Santiago or another South American destination can transform the trip into a broader adventure.

Antarctica Photography Guide

Capturing the White Continent

Antarctica can be extraordinarily difficult—and rewarding—to photograph. The biggest mistake is trying to photograph everything. Instead, slow down, watch, and look for behavior.

Wildlife

Penguins, seals and whales.

Scale

Use people, Zodiacs or ships to demonstrate the enormous scale of glaciers and icebergs.

Ice

Blue ice can produce extraordinary photographs.

Human Moments

Do not photograph only wildlife. Photograph the experience. A traveler standing quietly beside a penguin colony communicates emotion.

Expert Takeaway: 3 Decisions

How to choose the perfect expedition

1. How do you want to experience Antarctica?

Choose between the classic Drake Passage crossing or a time-saving Fly Cruise to bypass turbulent waters.

2. What do you most want to see?

Identify your priorities—penguins, whales, ice, or photography—to find the best itinerary for you.

3. How much time can you dedicate?

Decide if a shorter Peninsula journey or a deeper South Georgia expedition fits your schedule.
