How Many Days Do You Need in Amalfi?

THE LUXURY TRAVELER'S GUIDE

For most first-time luxury travelers, 4 to 5 days is the ideal amount of time to experience Amalfi and the Amalfi Coast without feeling rushed. Three days can work if you want to see the major highlights. Five days gives you enough time to combine Amalfi, Positano and Ravello with a private boat experience, exceptional dining and genuine downtime. If you have seven days, you can experience the coast at a much slower, more luxurious pace—with time for Capri, beaches, hiking, wellness and spontaneous discoveries. But there is an important distinction: Amalfi town and the Amalfi Coast are not the same thing. For luxury travelers, the right number of days is therefore less about checking destinations off a list and more about creating enough time to experience the coast properly.

The Short Answer
"

Choose 3 days if: You are adding Amalfi to a larger Italy trip and primarily want to see the famous highlights.

Choose 5 days if: You want the best balance of sightseeing, luxury experiences and relaxation.

Choose 7 days if: You want to slow down, enjoy your hotel, take a private boat, visit Capri, explore Ravello and Positano, enjoy exceptional meals and leave room for spontaneous experiences.

Choose 8–10+ days if: The Amalfi Coast is one of the main purposes of your Italy vacation and you want to combine it with Capri, Pompeii, Naples, culinary experiences, hiking or other destinations in Campania.

"During busy periods, traffic and crowds can make road travel particularly time-consuming. A luxury Amalfi itinerary should not be designed simply by counting towns."

Before deciding how many days you need, determine what you actually mean by 'Amalfi'.

Amalfi Town

  • →Time Needed: One to two full days
  • →Piazza Duomo: Historic town center
  • →Cathedral: Amalfi Cathedral
  • →Local Goods: Boutiques & lemon products
  • →Nearby: Atrani
  • →Dining: Cafés and waterfront restaurants
VS

  • →Activities: Private boat experiences, hiking
  • →Nearby: Capri, Cetara, Vietri sul Mare

Amalfi Coast Planning Advice

"The Amalfi Coast requires careful logistical planning."

Frequently Asked Questions

While technically possible, we strongly advise against it for luxury travelers. It requires 6+ hours of travel round-trip and leaves very little time to actually experience the coast.

Positano is glamorous and vertical, Ravello is elegant and peaceful, and Amalfi town is a great central transportation hub. It depends on your travel style.

No. In fact, driving yourself can be highly stressful due to narrow roads and limited parking. We recommend private drivers and ferries.
